Feature Department: University Memory and Aging Center

Four million Americans are currently affected by Alzheimer's Disease. This number is expected to increase to 10 million in the next century as more people live longer.

For the past decade, the goal of the University Memory and Aging Center of Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland has been to promote the best possible care for persons with memory problems, and to assist their families, through an integrated program of clinical services, research, and education. The University Memory and Aging Center is the only federally funded facility in the state of Ohio specifically designated by the National Institute on Aging as an Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

The University Memory and Aging Center carries out memory and aging studies in Northeastern Ohio, and collaborates with researchers across the country and throughout the world. Their researchers and clinicians are at the forefront in providing help in the present and hope for the future for those affected by Alzheimer's disease: patients, caregivers, family members and friends.

Members of the University Memory and Aging Center participating as NetWellness experts in the Alzheimer's Disease topic area include: Paula Ogrocki, Ph.D., Wendy Lemere, MSN, RN, CS, Concepcion Santillan, MD, Leighanne Hustak, ND, CNP, Karen Long, MSN, CRNP, and Robert Friedland, M.D.

Pre-anesthesia Online Interview

Gareth S. Kantor, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has developed Pre-anesthesia Online Interview, an interactive interview for patients planning surgery. The interview will increase your knowledge of anesthesia so you can make better decisions about your care and be more confident about preparation for, and recovery from, anesthesia and surgery. The interview results in a summary that you can print and share with your surgeons or anesthesiologists. Dr. Kantor believes this is the first tool of its kind on the web.
