NetWellness Experts Answer 23,000 Questions

"Ask an Expert" - A unique NetWellness service

Cincinnati, Ohio [April 30, 2004]— This month, NetWellness, one of the first consumer health information sites on the Internet, posted the 23,000th question answered by faculty from its partner universities. NetWellness is a nonprofit service that provides high quality information created and evaluated by medical and health professional faculty at the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University. Health care faculty from the three universities serve as "experts" in NetWellness's interactive "Ask an Expert" service. Forbes.com cites "Ask an Expert" as NetWellness's unique and most valuable feature.

Janet Trigg, RN, EdD, professor emeritus of the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, answered the 23,000th question, providing information about the youngest age at which a person might develop breast cancer. Dr. Trigg began answering questions posed by NetWellness visitors in January 1997. Since that time, she has answered over 550 questions from consumers seeking information about breast cancer. When asked about her NetWellness experience, Dr. Trigg said, "By answering questions on NetWellness I believe I'm helping women, men, and their families to cope with breast cancer. The fact that all the questions and answers are available to everyone makes it especially valuable and my experience especially rewarding."

One reason for its popularity is that NetWellness experts respond to all legitimate questions, usually within two or three days. Questions and answers are available for other visitors to browse or search. NetWellness adheres to a strict privacy policy. No personal information is collected or posted. NetWellness has over 30,000 pages of information on virtually all health topics. Experts answer between 4,000 and 6,000 questions annually.

NetWellness has thrived as a non-profit web service for the public through the combination voluntary contributions of university faculty members as well as foundation and government support. Initially funded by the State of Ohio, funding was secured in the federal budget through the leadership of Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre), Rep. Dave Hobson (R-Springfield) and Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-OH). Today more than 270 experts from Ohio's partner universities answer questions on hundreds of health topics posed by the public.
