Dr. Schlesinger joined the faculty in 2002. He is a member of the Integrated Biomedical Graduate Program, and is a recipient of awards from the American Lung Association, Department of Veterans Affairs, and NIH for work with M. tuberculosis. Special Interests Dr. Schlesinger's clinical interest is in Tuberculosis and Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. His research interest is in human mononuclear phagocyte interactions with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. He studies the influence of mycobacterial surface glycolipids on complement activation and binding to phagocytes. He also studies the mechanism of phagocytosis of mycobacteria by macrophages, the interacellular trafficking of mycobacteria, and the regulation of macrophage surface receptors. His recent work focuses on pulmonary models of the innate immune response to mycobacteria, use of current molecular approaches to making knock-out strains of bacteria, and in iron metabolism in M. tuberculosis-infected macrophages.Visit the Division of Infectious Diseases Directory for more information about Dr. Schlesinger.
