The OSU Hemochromatosis Program
The OSU Hemochromatosis Program offers screening, consultation, diagnosis, and treatment for hemochromatosis, a common genetic disorder that causes the body to absorb and store abnormal levels of iron.
- Hemochromatosis can be the underlying cause for a variety of health conditions including arthritis, liver disease, diabetes mellitus, heart abnormalities, early menopause, thyroid deficiency and damage to the adrenal gland.
- Symptoms, such as joint pain, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of sex drive or heart problems, often mimic or coexist with other conditions hindering early diagnosis and treatment.
- Diagnosis is confirmed with a thorough medical history, physical examination and blood testing.
- Treatment, if detected early, is simple, safe and inexpensive, utilizing blood donations to return iron levels to normal ranges.
- The program will assist with follow-up and referral for specialty care as needed. Patients can continue to be seen by their primary care physician at all times.
The OSU Hemochromatosis Program offers services at OSU Primary Care Network sites, including Cramblett Hall (OSU Clinic) and Grove City. For additional information, consultation, or referral, call (614) 539-2345.
