Stories From Sleep: a Wake-Up Call from 90.3 WCPN ideastream

The United States faces a national sleep deficit and it’s getting worse. The Center for Disease Control calls insufficient sleep an epidemic that’s affecting our health, safety, mood and efficiency. It has links to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity, anger and more. Most adults need 7 1/2 to 8 hours sleep each night and teens need 9 hours. But two-thirds of Americans who responded to a survey earlier this year by the National Sleep Foundation said their sleep needs are not being met; 43% say they “rarely or never get a good night’s sleep on weeknights.” Why? Among the causes: the pervasive use of communications technology in the hour before bed, alcohol use and the lack of regularity in sleep schedules.

What can be done? Sleep: A Wake-Up Call is a multiple media exploration of sleep and why many of us don’t get enough of it. This special coverage will examine everything from shift-work to sleep walking, snoring to cat-naps, dreaming to insomnia, and look at the brain and body to understand what exactly happens in and to our bodies when we are sleeping.

Animal Sleep

Listen to this Program

All mammals share the same fundamental sleep cycle. Here various animals are profiled at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo & their sleep needs/patterns compared with humans. Dr. Kristen Lukas is the Zoo’s Curator of Conservation and Science Division, and she teaches animal behavior science at Case Western Reserve University. She visits animals with interesting sleep habits and is joined along the way by CWRU graduate student Grace Fuller who works with nocturnal primates at the zoo.

Parasomnias

Listen to this Program

Walking, talking, eating, sex – all normal activities to engage in…but what if you’re asleep? Parasomnias are strange behaviors that happen during sleep, and they include everything from sleepwalking to night terrors to acting out your dreams. Dr. Brian Koo, a neurologist at University Hospitals of Cleveland, specializes in sleep disorders and will explain the wide variety of parasomnias patients can experience and what type of treatment is available. Anthony (Tony) Paul Gialluca from Canton, OH, is a patient of Dr. Koo’s at the VA. He has REM sleep behavior disorder, a condition in which he acts out his dreams. This has lead to bodily harm to himself and it has impacted his relationships as well. We will also speak with Sharon Whipple from Tallmadge, Ohio, about a curious parasomnia: “sleepsex.”

Sleep and Children (Eric Wellman)

Listen to this Program

According to the National Sleep Foundation, 69% of children experience one or more sleep problems a few nights or more during a week. Several studies indicate that children who don’t get enough sleep are more apt to have weight problems, and poor sleep may be a factor in aggressive behavior among kids. According to new research by the University of Michigan Medical School, it was found that children who bully other kids are more likely to be sleepy during the day.
