Mouth rash?

08/18/1999

Question:

For about a week now, my lips and surrounding skin have been EXTREMELY dry/chapped/inflamed. Rash-like teeny tiny bumps/blisters? (Not fever blisters/I get those sometimes.) What are the possibilities?

Answer:

The condition sounds like an irritant dermatitis. The rash and blisters indicate inflammation. The dry, chapped condition is also a response of the skin to the process of irritation. The causes of irritant reactions vary and can include reactions to something that has been applied to the skin. For example, have you used any new product on your lips? In some cases, exposure to the sun can cause this type of reaction. In other cases, certain medications, in combination with the sun, can result in irritant rash. I cannot give you a definitive diagnosis, but these are some of the factors.
