Fever Blisters

05/02/2000 03:22PM

Question:

What can I do for fever blisters? My doctor gave me Denavir Cream however, I don`t think that it helped. Is there anything else I can use. Is there any thing over the counter I can buy to help clear or dry them up? Thanks.

Answer:

Fever blisters are caused by a virus called Herpes Simplex. Antiviral agents come in topical and oral form. If the fever bisters are episodic and occur less than 4-6 times per year, an oral antiviral medication such as Acyclovir, Valacyclovir or Famcyclovir may be effective at reducing the symptoms of the breakout if taken appropriately (at the 1st sign of onset of symptoms). If you are having more than 4-6 episodes per year, the same agents can be used to suppress your breakouts. There are no effective over the counter therapies.
