Black Cohosh and menopause

07/25/2003

Question:

I have been on estrogen (patches) for 18 yrs. I am weaning off of them and the Dr. suggested taking Remifemin for a month during the weaning time. I`m wondering whether it would be OK to continue with just Black Cohosh after finishing the Remifemin. Is it safe and how long can you continue it??

Answer:

Black cohosh is an herb commonly used for symptoms related to menopause, PMS and dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea is defined as painful menses. Remifemin is a branded herbal preparation containing 20mg of black cohosh. Remifemin has been studied in several clinical trials to determine the effectiveness and safety of the product. A review of clinical trials that involved black cohosh suggests that it may be useful for the treatment of hot flashes, profuse sweating, insomnia and anxiety. Black cohosh has been safely used in studies lasting up to 6 months. The safety of long term use is unknown. Some side effects that have been reported are nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness and weight gain. Doses may vary based on which type of product used, either rhizome/root product or extracts of the product. If you have further concerns about the use of this product it may be helpful to discuss them with your physician.
