Negative health effects of a low fiber diet

03/30/2004

Question:

what are some negative health effects of a low fiber diet?

Answer:

Thanks for your question. A diet low in fiber may affect colon health- meaning, it may lead to constipation, diverticulosis or other conditions. Researchers are still investigating whether a high fiber diet helps prevent colon cancer. Currently, there is not enough conclusive evidence, but a high fiber diet is still prudent advice if you have a family history of colon cancer. A high fiber diet has been linked with the reduction of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other disorders. For more information on fiber or types of fiber, search this section of NetWellness.
