How do you cope with lung cancer?

10/14/2005 11:45AM

Question:

How do you and your family cope with someone in your family has lung cancer? What can you do?

Answer:

There usually are several avenues to pursue for assistance with coping with a diagnosis of lung cancer.

The first are usually the patient's physicians, the primary care physician and the oncologist or cancer doctor.  They are best able to answer questions about the cancer, its stage, treatment options, and prognosis.  They may also be able to refer you to local support groups and know the resources that are available in your local community.

Additional support is usual available from social workers either in the hospital or in the cancer center where the patient is being treated.  Many cancer centers offer support groups for family members.

Further information can be obtained from the American Thoracic Society and the American Cancer Society.
