Deviated septum

11/07/2005

Question:

related to a deviated septum i had surgury last year, and my septum was repaired, now it is crooked again, i am having trouble breathing, and strange odor in my nose, how did this happen? i read somewhere that rhinoplasty is sometimes done with a septum surgery, and since my nose is still werid from my fall at age 13 could that be the reason it went crooked again?, the surgeon didnt do any rhino repair thankyou

Answer:

You describe a complicated situation and I cannot give you one simple answer which will answer all your questions. Basically, the septum can be repaired either alone or with a rhinoplasty. The septum is made of cartilage and bone and is flexible. It is possible for the septum to be straightened and then move back to it's deviated position. There are many possible causes for the odor, but this is abnormal and you should have it investigated with a physical exam by a experienced ENT doctor.
