Onychomychosis - contagious?05/23/2006 |
Hi, I recently shared a nail clipper with someone who has onychomychosis - and now I am worried I will contract it. What are the chances I will get this fungus from a single exposure -- and is there anything I can do at this early stage to prevent it?Thanks!
Risk factors for onychomycosis include family history, advancing age, poor health, trauma, living in a warm climate, participation in fitness activities, immunosuppression (can occur from HIV or certain drugs), bathing in communal showers (such as at a gym), and wearing shoes that cover the toes completely and don't let in any airflow. You do have a risk of getting infection in this manner.
