Ruptured ovarian cyst04/10/2006 |
I have been having pain in my right side for over a year now. I don`t have insurance so i couldn`t get medical help. I sat up at the ER for 12 hours and after a couple tests a CT scan showed i have a larger than normal ruptured ovarian cyst. The doctor gave me pain medicantion and a list of ginnys to go to. My Question is... How serious can this be? Because i let it go for so long and is it possible i could have ovarian cancer? Should i be worried???
I can't comment on how serious a ruptured ovarian cyst may be because I do not know any of your history. Something as simple as your age would give me some idea of how serious this is. In general, the ovary forms a cyst every month that contains the developing egg and makes the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Every month the cyst ruptures to release the egg. Occasionally, the cyst can become enlarged, up to 8 centimeters in diameter before rupture. The fluid in the cyst can be very irritating to the abdomen causing pain. It is very possible that this is the type of cyst that was seen in the ER. If so, it isn't very serious other than the pain. Oral contraceptive pills would help prevent the egg from forming every month and decrease the incidence of these ovarian cysts. Without the report of the CT scan or ultrasound, I can't tell you whether or not to be worried.
