04/17/2006

Question:

I am male/47 yrs. hypertensive and on ATENOLOL 50 Twice a day AMLODEPINE 5 Mg Twice a day LOSARTAN POTASIUM 50 Mg twice a day :HYDROCHOLOROTHIAZIDE-12.5 Twice a day Today I had gone for check u due to postural fall of BP with prescribes drugs. My doctor suggested TEMISARTAN 40 with Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 once day in place of Losartan and H diruitic as above. He says Hydrochlorothiazide whether taken 12.5 or 25 has the same effect. Is it true ?

Answer:

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is an excellent diuretic and is often used as an antihypertensive agent.  The dose of 25 mg is more effective than 12.5 mg per day.  However, telmisartan is slightly more effective than losartan in lowering blood pressure.  The new combination may therefore work just as well.  Remember that your ideal blood pressure should be 130/80 or lower.
