Sore itchy red patch on tongue

08/23/2006

Question:

About 15 days ago i developed a red patch on my tongue with a white rim around it, it was very sore and rough, its about 1 and half cm. recently the white rim has gone away but now my tongue is very itchy and still sore. i havnt eaten anything unusal or been exposed to anything out of the ordinary. im not sure whats wrong with it or how i can get rid of it?

Answer:

This problem is probably due to one of two conditions.  The first is called geographic tongue.  Other names are benign migratory glossitis or erythema migrans, but they all describe a lesion similar to the one on your tongue.  The second is a form of yeast infection caused by Candida albicans.  The red patch on the tongue, usually affecting the middle of the tongue, is called central papillary atrophy or median rhomboid glossitis.

If I had to guess, the rapid changes of the patch make it sound like geographic tongue.  This is not a serious condition and cannot be transmitted to anyone, but you cannot be “cured” of it either. Many patients have no symptoms at all.  For more symptomatic cases, like yours, the use of a topical corticosteroid syrup or elixir (in a swish-and-spit fashion) a couple of times a day usually gets rid of the worst of the soreness.

My advice would be to see your dentist or a dental specialist to be sure.

Good luck!
