Diabetes |
How long?08/31/2006 |
I have a great aunt that has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. However we are not sure how long she has had this condition because she does not visit the doctor on a regular basis. She is taking the proper medications nowbut I was wondering, how long can someone who is unaware live with this condition without treatment?
It is very common for people to have so-called type 2 diabetes (previously called non-insulin-dependent) for many years without it being found out but relatively uncommon to have type 1 diabetes (previously called insulin-dependent) for a prolonged period without discovery. We base this in part on how far the complications of diabetes may have progressed at the time that a diagnosis is made, and also on our understanding of how sick a person can be for long periods with the condition going undetected. The answer to your question with respect to type 2 diabetes is "many years."
