Does the body store synthroid medication?04/06/2007 |
I am a 54 year old male who has taken synthroid since 1989.my thryroid was killed off by a radiaion cocktail because of hyperthyriod condition.i was put on a small amount of synthroid in the begining and i`m up to 200mcg to date. My question is does this medication store in the body over time?....Thank-You in advance for your answer.
Synthroid is typically taken on an everyday basis. If taken properly and on schedule, the medication levels in the body should be consistently the same everyday. If you don’t already know, Synthroid should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast.
Antacids, iron, and calcium supplements should be spaced out by 4 hours. Antacids, iron, and calcium can all potentially interact with Synthroid and decrease its ability to be more effective. This is important to realize since not taking the medication properly could lead to a decrease in its effectiveness, which can affect your Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) blood level, indicating to your physician that you may need an increase in your dosage of Synthroid - when in actuality you may not be getting the full dose of your current Synthroid due to the interaction.
The other thing to keep in mind is making sure you stay on the same brand or generic. Switching from one brand to another can also have an effect on your levels.
If you haven’t been taking your Synthroid as mentioned or recommended by your physician, I would change your routine, and make a doctor's appointment in one month to check your TSH blood levels to see if adjustments are required.
