Deep crease on tongue

05/30/2007

Question:

My husband has a deep crease down the middle of his tongue with smaller creases covering either side. His tongue is a normal colour. He also suffers from occasional bad breath. Is this anything to worry about?

Answer:

Your husband has something called "fissured tongue." Approximately 2 to 5% of the population has it. The only form of "treatment" for this is to brush the tongue thoroughly to remove food that may be trapped in it. This could contribute to the bad breath.
