Feather allergy

06/06/2007

Question:

I bought a feather bed cover and a feather comforter becaused they seemed so cozy 2 years ago. However, after 20 months of abdominal pain, 2 ultra sounds, a CT scan, pelvic x-ray, and numerous blood tests all showing normal, except for an allergy to eggs (IgG antibodies)...I went away for a week and the abdominal pain went away...I came back and the pain began again...It dawned on me that it might be the down bedding so removed it. The abdominal pain is gone. Could this really be the cause? A feather allergy to cause abdominal pain??? How could I get this tested?

Answer:

This would be difficult to prove by in vitro or in vivo testing alone.  A challenge to feathers would be the best approach to see if reexposure to feathers reproduces your abdominal symptoms. If you want to pursue whether feathers cause the problem, you need to see a qualified allergist for further evaluation.  In medicine anything is conceivably possible, however, this would be a very unusual reaction to feathers.
