Soreness after biopsy

07/19/2007

Question:

I had surgery on my tongue three weeks ago. The doctor took a biopsy of a white lesion there. It was thankfully not cancer. However, I still have to take a half of a pain pill, 250 mg, in order to eat supper. When will this soreness go away? Am I having a problem? Thanks for your answer.

Answer:

It does take a while for the soreness to go away.  The tongue is a very sensitive area of the mouth, especially when eating, since the food can keep irritating the exposed area.  It can take a good 6-8 weeks for complete healing.  It should be getting better, though.  If it gets worse, I'd contact the surgeon who performed the procedure.
