Post root canal

08/15/2007

Question:

I had a root canal on the far back left molar 6 weeks ago 4 weeks ago the dentist went in and removed the decay. My jaw and ear continued to be sore. One week ago he put the permanent crown on. 3 days following my cheek and jaw area became numb and I have been extremely dizzy for a week. They tried Promethazine 25mg. and now on Methylpred 4mg. thinking that a nerve was inflamed. Still numb and dizzy. Could the dentist have damaged a nerve in the procedure of the root canal or putting the crown on. My Blood pressure is excellent and my ears are clear and fine too. I am 56 years old. I don`t have any other numbess anywhere. Thanks

Answer:

Your question does not appear to be related to the root canal treatment since the problems you are having are 6 weeks after endodontic treatment and you have had procedures done since then.  However, I cannot diagnose anything since I have not evaluated you directly.  It is possible that this may be related to dental injections but dizziness is not usually related to this.  I have included a link that relates to a previously answered question regarding continued numbness and I would recommend continued follow-up with your dentist.  If you are having serious problems with dizziness, I would recommend a medical consult asap to rule out any medical causes.
