Breast Cancer Restriction of milk products

08/31/2007

Question:

Is it appropriate for a breast cancer survivor (under physician`s advice) to refrain totally for the rest of their life from consuming dairy products and soy? Two doctors treating this person disagree about this. The oncologist appears to believe that this restriction will lower the risk of recurrence. What about bone and dental health? Can they be maintained by using Calcium fortified orange juice, nuts and vegatable calcium sources, and supplements (oyster shell) totaling 1200 mg. per day?

Answer:

Consuming soy products, more so than dairy products, is a issue under debate. To date, there is no direct scientific evidence proving that a diet completely free from soy or dairy products will prevent cancer recurrence or development of another breast cancer. All types of foods including all of the food groups should be eaten in moderation according to the American Cancer Society recommendations.
