Starvation mode09/26/2007 |
I have not been eating normally all my life, it usually because I am not hungry or I cant taste the food. Past year I started training for marathon thinking that my appetite will increase, but the opposite happened it decreased. After noticing that my pant felt tighter I went to see a nutritionist. After doing some tests she said that my body is in starvation mode and that everything I eat is stored. It has been 3 months since that. I started increasing my calories and forcing my self to eat, even thought I am not hungry and I can’t taste the food I eat 5 times a day. So far nothing has changed but my weight. I still have hard time eating and the food still tastes like crap for 90% of the time, however I gaining an about 20 ponds so far and I feel I am still gaining. My questions is how long does it take to recover and is this normal that after 3 months of eating normally not has changed.
Without knowing more about your individual situation, it is difficult to determine what the true underlying problems are. That said, I would recommend that you discuss your concerns about your lack of ability to taste food and your low appetite with your doctor. I would also recommend working with a registered dietitian to help evaluate your current intake and caloric/nutritional needs.
You might also consider having your resting metabolic rate and percent body fat measured to help determine your individual needs to achieve your weight goal. Keep in mind that people have different response times to treatment, so it is difficult to say how long weight loss would take.
If you are eating a well balanced diet that provides the calories you require for your energy needs you should see results over time [see MyPyramid.gov]. It can be a long process, so try to be patient. Good luck!
