Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder |
Where Do We Go?01/29/2008 |
Hello--We live in Buffalo, NY, and want to provide our 13-yr-old son with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety, and depression.
Our question? Where is the nearest or best to get such testing done? We will pay whatever fee is necessary.
He was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and has tried many, many different meds and combinations, in addition to therapy, and continues to follow with his psychiatrist. However, nothing is helping except to make things worse. We feel that our psychiatrist is frustrated and out of ideas.
Very sincerely,
a family in buffalo
Bill Pelham, Ph.D. has a highly respected program of assessment and behavioral treatment at the State University of NY at Buffalo.
The combination of medicine and behavioral treatment is sometimes effective when neither alone is. However, if your son is not responding to the usual ADHD treatments, the diagnosis should be re-evaluated. Sometimes other disorders mimic ADHD: such as mood disorders, some anxiety disorders, endocrine problems, parasites, or nutritional deficiencies. Some such mimics might actually be made worse by the usual proven ADHD medication.
A further thought is that I have seen a few children at your son's age outgrow their ADHD and start to show negative effects from the medicine. If it has not already been done, it would be justified to stop all medicine for a few weeks and see what "baseline" looks like. If he deteriorates, the medicine can be restarted, but if he stays the same or gets better, you have saved him unnecessary medication. This, of course, should be done under supervision of his doctor.
