Is VCUG necessary at this time

03/18/2008

Question:

My daughter is 5 months one week and she had a fever for less than three days. It only went about 102 once and went up to 104.3 but dropped right away after we used tylenol. The fever subsided completely on its own on the third day. She had absolutely no other symptoms, urine didn`t smell, no pain urinating, feeding well and she was smiling and playing even when she had a high fever. We would never have known there was something wrong with her if she didn`t have a fever. We took her to the pediatrician and they were unable to check her urine by catheter because she has a mild labial adhesion. Instead they collected the sample from a urine bag (she urinated immediately and doctor said it was as good as a catheter sample). We are waiting for the cultures and she is currently on a 10 day antibiotic. She is completely normal and no temperature whatsoever. Do we need to do a VCUG now or can we wait and see if she has a second UTI? Dr. was shocked when he saw her because she did not look sick, didn`t feel sick and was extremely social. I`m wondering if babies with reflux tend to be very sick or have some outward symptoms? I`m also wondering if the labial adhesion possibly caused the UTI or maybe my husband and I need to be more diligent about cleaning her after soiled diapers? She is breastfed and her bowel movements are very liquidy and tend to creep all the way up the front. We are waiting to talk to the Dr. and are unsure how they would do the VCUG with the labial adhesion. I`m wondering if we can get the renal ultrasound and wait and see if she has another UTI before doing a VCUG. I don`t want to subject her to that test if I don`t have to as we may have to use estrogen cream to do so. I would be more than happy to take her into the office for regular urine samples. What do you think?
