Options Available at 70 yrs / 40%?

03/26/2008 01:37PM

Question:

I`m wondering what options might be available for a woman 70 years of age, in good health other than osteoporsis with 40% kidney function? No cancer. No blood pressure problems. Would dialysis be the only option or would a kidney transplant be possible? Thank you.

Answer:

At 40% renal function you do not need any sort of renal replacement therapy (dialysis or transplant) at this time. Most patients will not need renal replacement therapy until there is less than 10% of renal function. You may never need to worry about this if your renal function is stable. Many transplant centers have a recommended age cut off for transplantation. Your kidney doctor can give you more information about your particular case.
