Effects of coffee on blood sugar

05/01/2008 03:16PM

Question:

does drinking coffee have any effects on blood sugar?

Answer:

Thanks for your question.  Although a small amount of coffee (approximately 2 cups/day) may aid in the prevention of diabetes, new research suggests that large amounts of caffeine (from coffee and other sources) may cause a spike in blood sugar levels, especially after meals.

In the meantime, you may want to limit coffee to 2 cups per day or less.  And, if you're concerned about sugar, drink your coffee black or with some skim milk added in.  Coffee drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes or mochas can be very high in sugar as well as calories.
