Lung and Respiratory Diseases

My spleen was removed last year

05/05/2008 07:07PM

Question:

How often do I need to get a pneumonia shot since my spleen was removed last year

Answer:

Patients with spenectomy should get an initial pneumococcal vaccine followed by a booster in 5 years. Ideally, the first vaccine should be given prior to spenectomy, but this is not always possible. Additionally, patients with spenectomy should receive a meningiococcal vaccine; this is a new vaccine that has recently been developed.
