Falling out of bed

05/28/2008

Question:

my husband age 70, fell out of bed last night, never happened before, no alcohol or drugs were involved. Does he need to see his doctor? He had a triple by-pass about 8 years ago. Thank you

Answer:

I will need more information about the circumstances around the fall. Was it during sleep or when trying to get out of bed? Were there any injuries? Does the patient remember events prior to the fall? Since he has a cardiac history it is best to see his primary care physician and make sure he does have any postural drop in blood pressure or other causes of falls. Most of the falls do occur between the bedroom and bathroom, so please keep the light turned on in the bedroom/bathroom area at night. Hope this helps.

Thanks for asking.
