Left sided flank pain

05/18/2008 07:04AM

Question:

A couple of weeks ago, I started with a severe pain in my left side and left side of my back. I thought I had pulled a muscle as I had a heavey cold and chest infection. However now the pain is still persistent and feels more like it is internal. Could I have a kidney infection? I have a small amount of leukocytes and a small amount of protein in my urine.

Answer:

It may be abnormal for you to have protein and leukocytes in your urine if you are male.  If you are female, a small amount of each is not necessarily abnormal.  It does not sound to me like your pain is coming from your kidneys.  However, please see the link to our article about kidney pain and, if after reading it, you feel that your pain is from your kidneys, you should see your doctor immediately for a thorough exam, a urine test (including urine culture), and an imaging study such as an ultrasound.
