Popping sound in knees?

06/01/2008 10:57PM

Question:

What causes a popping or cracking sound in the knees. It is not painful. But they do feel a little stiff right before they pop or crack. Then after that it feels better. Usually this happens right when I first start to exercise.

Answer:

Research has not given us a clear answer on what makes the popping noise. If it is pain-free, then do not worry about it. There is currently no link between popping noises and disease. However, if your knee makes a pop or crack noise and it is followed by pain, then see a doctor immediately.
