Anxiety and Stress Disorders (Children)

Is my toddler naughty or truly disturbed

06/30/2008 01:00AM

Question:

My daughter is 2 years 7 months and she cannot interact with most adults, she screems and gets irritated when anyone, including family members who she knows greet her and if they try to give her a kiss or touch her she screems blue murder and clings to me for dear life. Shouldn`t she get used to family members? She generally does not like men and screems blue murder when i take her to a man doctor, she is ok with a lady doctor. She has a great relationship with her daddy who is a very hands on dad so we cannot figure out why she dislikes/is afraid of men. She attends school half day, it took her a while to settle but she now loves it, has made friends and adores her teacher who says she doesn`t have problems at all with her. I am at my wits end as I find myself becomming angry and repremanding her when she screems as I am not sure how to react and all our family and friends think she is a extemely naughty. I have a second daughter who is 5 months and it is diffucult to cope with a screemeing toddler at the same time. Can you point me in the right direction so that I can find help for her.

Answer:

It is in the nature of toddlers to scream and to embarrass the adults in their environment. It sounds like she has good relationships with her peers and teacher at school. Stranger anxiety begins about age 18 months and can continue for some time in specific circumstances. From your description, your daughter seems normal and neither naughty nor disturbed.
