Black spots in right eye

08/15/2008 03:59PM

Question:

What causes black spots in your eyes?

Answer:

Black spots in the eye are generally due to the degeneration of the vitreous. The eye contains a clear fluid called the vitreous that fills up the eye. Over time the vitreous begins to break down and strands and debris become suspended inside the fluid. The debris cast shadows on the retina leading to the perception of spots. For the most part black spots are benign. However in some cases seeing spots could signify a more serious condition. For this reason it is advised to visit your eye care specialist for a retinal examination. Best of luck to you.
