Bowel movement

09/08/2008 01:58PM

Question:

lately i have been noticing blood on the tissue after having a bowel movement its not all the time. Blood doesn`t appear anywhere else but on the tissue and its only there the first time i wipe myself. It only happens when i strain. Could it be my diet?

Answer:

Most outlet bleeding is due to hemorrhoidal irritation, anusitis, or a fissure. A host of other less common things can cause it as well. A good exam with a physician who practices proctology is the first place to start. If you have never had a colonoscopy, it may be reasonable to consider this, or another diagnostic test, to make sure the true source of bleeding is not farther up from the anal canal.
