Primolut to `force` menopause?09/18/2008 02:09PM |
A woman working abroad in a developing country in her early 50s has heavy menstrual bleeding caused by fibrous growth in her uterus that is surgically removed. The bleeding stops. She is then prescribed "Primolut" to "force her body to go into menopause," with the other choice being a hysterectomy. If surgery to remove the fibers has stopped the bleeding, that what is the purpose of Primolut? Why not let the body naturally go into menopause?
In view of what you report, I would agree with you that the woman could be followed to see if her menses would be manageable until menopause. At her age she should be close to menopause. If heavy, irregular bleeding should develop, she could start the medication at that time.
