Pregnancy

Bacterial vaginosis

09/28/2008 10:14PM

Question:

I have had a bacterial infection 3 times and I am currently 24 weeks pregnant. My doctor has concluded that there are both risks to treating it again and letting it be for the fourth time. (Both can cause pre term labor???) Do you think that this is a valid answer or do you think I should seek a second opinion.

Answer:

There is a great deal of debate of the effect of bacterial vaginosis on preterm delivery. The best study that has been performed showed that treating bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy did not prevent preterm delivery. Many OBs choose to treat only women that have symptomatic bacterial vaginosis.
