Tag on inside cheek

09/29/2008 07:51PM

Question:

i have recently noticed a tiny hard white bump, almost tag like, on the inside of one cheek. i first thought it might have been skin that was pinched by my molars while i was asleep. what are your thoughts on this? i`m a non smoker in good health.

Answer:

If I had to guess without seeing it, I would guess that you are describing something called the Stenson's Duct. It is the opening for a salivary gland to pour saliva into your mouth. You would also have one on the other side. Most likely, the reason you are noticing only one is that it is inflamed. This can be due to a reduced salivary flow from medications, such as decongestants.

If it does not resolve on its own in a couple of weeks, follow up with your dentist or even your physician.
