Depression

Mixing Anti-depressants

10/10/2008

Question:

I have been taking Zoloft 60mg 1xdaily for a yr. prescribed for mild depression. I was prescribed Cymbalta 30mg 1xdaily for Fibromyalgia pain. Is there a chance for Serontin syndrome? I take the Zoloft in the morning and Cymbalta at night. If the Cymbalta is increased, what are the dangers?

Answer:

My first question would be if this regimen was prescribed by two different physicians. If so, some communication between the two must happen since this is somewhat unusual.

Although serotonin syndrome would be uncommon, it is very likely that serotonin side effects might increase with the combination. If possible the simplest regimen might be using a larger dose of cymbalta instead of two medications.
