Uncontrolled Sugar Levels – Numbness in Feet

12/23/2008

Question:

I`ve never gone to an information class about type 2 diabetes. I`m having trouble controlling my levels and my feet have been getting mildly numb for about 2 months now and its now in my lower legs. Is there something I can do to help myself? I also have fibromyalgia and it makes it very hard to excersise. Lately as well I have been having severe head sweating at night.

Answer:

What you may be experiencing is something called diabetic neuropathy. This is when the nerves in the feet and legs begin to lose their ability to function properly. It can result in pain, tingling, numbness or combinations of all three. It is very important that you get your blood sugar under control as this is the only way to stop the progression of this complication of diabetes. I would strongly suggest that you work with your primary care provider to control your blood sugars and make sure that you inspect your feet every day for any signs of injury. Wear good fitting socks and shoes every day and make sure that you check your shoes before putting them on to make sure there are no foreign objects in the shoe that might cause injury. Finally make sure you do not walk barefoot at home, use a slipper, sneaker or sandal in the house.
