What is fibroglandular density

03/02/2009

Question:

I just turned 35 on 1/24th. My doctor just called me and said after having my first mammogram on 2/14 that it showed I have fibroglandular density on my right breast. What is this? How do you get it? Should I be worried?

Thank you,

Answer:

“Fibroglandular density” really just means that the tissue in the breast is dense, possibly because you are so young. But usually, this is seen in both breasts, not one more than the other. For that reason, additional tests might be considered to evaluate the right breast, such as ultrasound or MRI. Also a good breast exam by your doctor is a good idea to be sure there is not something that can be felt in the right breast. But this mammogram finding would not be something to be overly worried about.
