Versed / Zemuron / Malignant Hyperthermia03/24/2009 |
1. Can versed and zemuron cause or contribute to malignant hyperthermia? 2. Can mailgnant hyperthermia occur in a mild case lasting 5 days having not being treated with dantralene?
Versed (midazolam, a benzodiazepine sedative) and Zemuron (rocuronium, a non-depolarising muscle relaxant) are not associated with malignant hyperthermia. Malignant hyperthermia is triggered by exposure to depoloarising muscle relaxants (like succinyl choline) and volatile anesthetic agents (like sevoflurane and isoflurane). The most important treatment for malignant hyperthermia is a drug called dantrolene, administered as soon as possible after the diagnosis is made. The severity of malignant hyperthermia episodes varies. Around 1-2% are fatal. If you have further questions I would contact the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States.
