Pain Management

Post bilateral mastectomy

06/02/2009

Question:

I have recently had bilateral mastectomy ( 4 weeks ago) without recontruction and I am having lots of nerve pain, especially on L side. What is the best treatment for nerve pain? Thanks

Answer:

There are graded approach to nerve related pain starting with desensitization and TENS unit, progressing to medications (anti-seizure and anti-depression medication as well as topical anesthetics and occasionally opioids) and finally neuromodulation approaches are used if pain is refractory. Seeing a Pain Specialist with an interest in Neuropathic pain would be helpful to achieving optimal outcome.
