Hypoparathyroidism/tetany07/27/2009 |
First, is Hypoparathyroidism fatal? Also, can muscle spasms from tetany be cured?
Clinical manifestations of hypoparathryoidism -including tetany- is mainly due to low ciruculatory calcium levels, which responds well to normalization of serum calcium by increasing calcium intake by mouth. The severity of symptoms related to hypocalcemia could vary from having simple tetany to death depending on the magnitude of low calcium as well as the rapidity of its development. For instance, severe hypocalcemia immediately after parathyroid removal (all four glands) in individuals with low vitamin D levels can cause death if remained untreated.
