Small veins hinder IV procedures

08/19/2009

Question:

whenever I have blood taken for analysis, the phlebotomist encounters problems (veins `slip` away; needle goes throughvein...), even when using a pediatric needle. I always am left with large bruises. is there anything, other than drinking a lot of water, that can be done to ameliorate this situation?

Answer:

There is really nothing specific that will enlarge your veins for IVs and blood draws.
