Does Sarcoidosis Have Any Effects On The Brain?

09/08/2009

Question:

Hello, my mother was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in May. She is taking Gabapentin among other things. She seems to have lost some brain functioning (for lack of a better explanation). Her speech is very slow, she is very chatty and gets confused easily.

Is there something else that could be going on that is going undiagnosed?

Answer:

Sarcoidosis can involve the brain. It is often difficult to confirm the diagnosis, and sarcoidosis can mimic other central nervous system disorders (e.g., tumors, multiple sclerosis). Gabapentin and other new medications should also be considered.
