Can you please give me a brief explanation why statins are usually given at night?
Thank you for contacting NetWellness. Statins are commonly administered in the evening or at bedtime because most have short half-lives and because peak cholesterol biosynthesis in our body occurs between midnight and 3 a.m.
Lovastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, and simvastatin have half-lives of less than 6 hours and therefore are always taken in the evening. However, Lipitor (atorvastatin) has a long half-life of 14 to 30 hours. A few studies found that changes in cholesterol levels were similar after morning and evening administration of Lipitor, suggesting that Lipitor may be administered in the morning or evening.
