Numbness on Leg After Using Medication?

10/29/2009

Question:

Hi, I recently have seen a doctor about a pain in my anus, which he diagnosed as being anal fissure. He gave me 2 ointments ; 1 whsch contains Tribenosid + Lidocaine HCl and one which Lidokain HCl . I have used it for about 1,5 weeks, and stopped using it for the following week. When that week had ended, Istarted feeling numbness in my anus which led to numbness in my right thigh then my lower leg and finally my foot. I`d like to know the reason why this numbness is travelling throuhg my body and if there`s anything for me to do to prevent this from happening. Thanks.

Answer:

The medication that you are describing is not available in the United States. We do not have a great deal of experience with tribenoside; however, lidocaine is very commonly used here. Neither the data available for lidocaine, nor the limited information that I was able to find for tribenoside describe a delayed response similar to what you are describing. While lidocaine causes numbness, it should not be happening that long after topical exposure.

I highly recommend that you discuss these symptoms with your physician as they may be a symptom of something else entirely.
