How Can I Build Strength in My Knee w/o Pain?

12/14/2009

Question:

Everytime I use my excercise bicycle my knee hurts. I tried adjusting the position, but I still feel pain. How do I build strength around my knee, to avoid pain?

Answer:

The best way to build strength around your knee is to focus on quad and hamstring exercises. Incorporate single leg exercises such as hamstring curls or leg extensions as strength exercises. You may also perform single leg lunges. While you are building muscle, it is important to maintain flexibility by stretching your quad, hamstring, and hip flexor muscles.

Prior to starting a new exercise routine, you should have an exam by your physician to determine if a strength program is appropriate for you.
