Can I Get Pregnant While Breast Feeding?

03/05/2010

Question:

Hi there, I have breast-fed my child for 10 months now and I will continue as long until he stops it himself. I have no peroid either.

I have sex without protection with my husband (no condom, no birth control pill).

Is there any chance that I am pregnant while I am breast-feeding? I want to test my urine for hCG but I am not sure whether this is valid or not for woman who is breast-feeding. Can urine hCG test determine whether I am pregnant or not during the absence of period while I am breast-feeding?

Answer:

Yes, urine pregnancy tests are accurate during breast feeding. As your child consumes more food and less breast milk, you may become fertile again. You may need to start using contraception to prevent pregnancy.
