Hard and Discolored Bellybutton

05/27/2010

Question:

MY 15 MONTH OLD HAD A GRANULOMA WHEN HE WAS BORN, HIS PEDATRICIAN BURNED IT OFF AND SAID IT SHOULD HEAL UP FINE. SINCE THEN HE HAS ALWAYS HAD A HARD BELLYBUTTON AND ITS A DARKER COLOR(PURPLISH/RED) HE IS ALWAYS DIGGING IN IT. DOES IT HURT WHAT COULD THIS BE?

Answer:

It sounds as though you pediatrician managed the newborn granuloma issue appropriately.  Even with appropriate management, at times, situations develop.  It may be wise to double check with a pediatric surgeon to see if a surgical revision (a minor, usually outpatient procedure) is indicated.  This will set your mind at ease, one way or another.
